Summer camp for high achieving minority 7th & 8th grade students this information about the STEMPREPProject , a national summer vehicle which has been producing  minority terminal degree holders in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) and Medicine.   Every summer, the Project assembles a national pool of 7th graders for a six weekSTEM training program at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas.  For the last 24 years, the STEMPREP Project has employed a ten-summer training pipeline to create a cadre of STEM trainees eligible for post-baccalaureate programs at the nation’s elite graduate schools, medical schools and engineering schools.  The STEMPREP Project has become one of the most successful training initiatives in U.S. history: 100% of our trainees attend college, 100% graduate from college, 92% complete the 10-year regimen and 83% of our college seniors matriculate into post-baccalaureate educational programs in STEM.   I am attaching the application and brochure.  Financial aid to cover summer costs is available.  The application for admission is due May 16, and applicants should be A students for the last three years.   I hope you will ask your students to view the two 4-minute videos and article on the Project at: www.smu.edu/stemprep

Our target population is those racial groups underrepresented in the STEM arena: African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Hawaiians, Native Americans, and Mainland Puerto Ricans. Extensive details about the STEMPREP Project can be found on our website: www.thedistancelearningcenter.org

School may be out, but science is in! GSK Science in the Summer™ brings simple machines to elementary students at Philadelphia libraries

- Registration begins May 1, space is limited

Philadelphia County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GSK Science in the Summer™. This free, fun experiment-oriented course is taught by certified teachers to groups of 16 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I), and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II). GSK Science in the Summer™ is sponsored by GSK in partnership with The Franklin Institute and local libraries.

Course Description:

GSK Science in the Summer™ will teach Philadelphia students the basics of physics through experiments involving six types of simple machines: the lever, the inclined plane, the screw, the wheel, the pulley, and the gear. Philadelphia County students will build simple machines that help people to do work—such as lifting huge boulders, building bridges, pumping water, and many other critical tasks—more easily. Students will learn about motion, and will discover that everything in the universe moves and why this is the case.

In Philadelphia, GSK Science in the Summer™ consists of two two-hour sessions that occur across two days. Class times are Level I: 10 a.m. – noon and Level II: 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

Now in its 28th year, GSK Science in the Summer™ opens young minds to the world of science and fosters a life-long appreciation of learning. More than 120,000 students from the Greater Philadelphia Area have participated in GSK Science in the Summer™ since its inception.

Registration Information:

Parents must register in person at the library they wish their child to attend. Students are selected to participate through a lottery. See below for registration and course dates and library phone numbers.

The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is organized to provide activities,

experiments, projects, and field experiences for students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall of the next year. The camp promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and supports historically underserved and underrepresented students with limited opportunities. Students attend the camp free of charge.

Students currently in grade 5, 6, or 7 who have an interest in science and mathematics, at least a B average in science and mathematics courses and a passing score on the state’s standardized science and mathematics tests are eligible to apply. Immediate family members of the university staff, EMBHSSC camp staff and ExxonMobil employees are not eligible.

Women In Natural Sciences (WINS) is a free after-school and summer science enrichment program at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Since its founding in 1982, WINS has introduced hundreds of high school girls to future careers in science and other professions by providing hands-on science workshops, career and college exploration, and positive youth development.

WINS provides young women with the information, encouragement, and confidence they need to shape their futures. The program’s mentoring and support has resulted in 100% of WINS students graduating high school and over 96% attending college.

In addition to a strong emphasis on academics and science, WINS also provides a uniquely nurturing environment, a community of like-minded friends, and experiences not typically found in school.

Welcome to the Penn Chapter of InnoWorks!

This summer, the University of Pennsylvania will host its seventh annual InnoWorks program beginning August 19th and ending August 23rd. We are currently in the planning stages of the program where we are looking to secure funding and sponsorship for supplies, housing, and food.

As always, Penn InnoWorks provides a free week-long science and engineering camp for underprivileged middle school students in the Philadelphia area. This year we hope to host 30 free and reduced lunch students and provide them with the opportunity to learn about science through exciting and interactive activities outside of the traditional school environment.

This summer, we are so excite to be planning the activities and missions based on the Eureka Effect curriculum. Students will explore scientific miracles that occur in every day life to understand and appreciate achievement. We will be discovering music, learn how electricity is generated, understand why soap cleans, and more!

Join us for InnoWorks at Penn this year, where learning science and engineering is all about fun! If you have any questions about the upcoming program, want to get involved, or want to make a donation, please feel free to contact us at upenn@innoworks.org.

ISAK Summer School 2014 in Japan: Full Scholarships for Grade 7/8 Students

For the third consecutive year, the United States-Japan Foundation is generously offeringfour full scholarships for US middle school students to attend the ISAK Summer School in Karuizawa, Japan (approx. one hour from Tokyo). ISAK Summer School is an English-based academic program for motivated middle school students from around the world, with a focus on helping students develop their leadership, negotiation and creative problem-solving skills as they interact with other students from a wide range of countries, cultures and backgrounds. Our faculty members are from top-schools from the US, Japan and other countries, and students will also be joined by camp counselors from top universities such as Stanford, Brown and Dartmouth.

US-Japan Foundation scholarships cover the cost of Summer School tuition (approx. US$3800). All students currently in grades 7-8 (grades 8-9 as of Sept. 2014) who are US citizens currently attending school in the US are eligible to apply. APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 30, 2014.

ISAK Summer School Quick FactsLocation: Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (approx. 1hr from Tokyo)Dates: July 19 – 31, 2014Capacity: 80 studentsLanguage: English

This year, we are expecting students from approximately 20 countries to join us, including Japan, India, Nepal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Ecuador, China, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Slovakia and the US. ISAK Summer School is not a “discover Japan” or cultural exchange program per se, but rather, we are seeking students who are excited to think, learn and explore new ideas with motivated peers from around the world and to realize their potential as future leaders.

We have already stopped accepting general applications for this year’s Summer School, but we will be accepting applications for US-Japan Foundation scholarships until April 30, 2014. We encourage interested students to submit their completed applications as soon as possible.

We realize that a solo trip to Japan for middle school students is a major undertaking, but we have experience in guiding families through the process, and we take excellent care of students from the moment they arrive in Japan. If you have any questions about ISAK Summer School or the scholarship application process, please contact us at programs@isak.jp.
